In a side note to yesterday's posting on Roman Polanski I asked about national differences in birthday habits - some left comments, and the Rainy Day Team - Eamonn Fitzgerald and wife - held a conference "to come up with an explanation for why birthdays are downplayed in the Anglosphere and revered in Germanic culture".
