Gandrange is now closed

ArcelorMittal today has shut down its Gandrange, France steelmaking and concasting facilities, reducing production capacities by approximately 1.5 millions ton per years. Shut down units include the 160 t twin shell electric arc furnace, ladle furnaces, vacuum degassers, and two bloom casters. Downstream units including the rolling mills will remain in service. Closure plans for Gandrange were already revealed in January, 2008, but it is the first plant that is gone for good during the current downswing. Other steelmakers across Europe so far just halted or reduced production. Uwe Niggemeier is having some Gandrange photos on his recommended Stahlseite.
