When I checked the Openstreetmap data for Dortmund, Germany, early this year, I found complete road coverage (which is an achievement itself), but important other elements were still missing. There was, for example, almost no data on waterways, even though the city has a rather large harbor. Today, most of Dortmund is covered in such detail and quality that it is just astonishing. And you can use that data for your own endeavours. And edit it and improve it further. It is quite simple.
