1959: The Day the Music dies

"Jiles P. Richardson, Charles Holley, Richard Valenzuela and Roger A. Peterson, pilot of the plane were killed in the crash of a chartered [Beechcraft Bonanza] airplane when it fell within minutes of takeoff from the Mason City Airport," the coroner's report said. "The three passengers were members of a troupe of entertainers", better known as Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson. And each year, people re-read Bob Dearborn's American Pie Special, first aired in 1972.
