Diego Doval - a very nice guy I recently talked a lot with on the Instant Messenger - has released the public beta of Clevercactus, formerly known as Spaces. Clevercactus is a new kind of PIM that lets you handle your mails and newsgroup messages, calendar items, contacts, tasks, RSS news feeds etc. in so called spaces that make it easy to keep data belonging to one task or project together - Chandler has a similar approach, but is far from being ready to use. Also, Clevercactus can't just read RSS files, but also allows you to post to your weblog via XML-RPC - this entry has been posted using it (except for the images, which have been uploaded in MovableType). Implemented in Java, it is a cross-platform application.
So far, I played around with it for some minutes only. Installation on a Windows 2k box was painless (it comes with an installer) and import of some 10,000 test items from Mozilla was smooth. It exactly replicates your existing folder structure, but you have to import data from each of your Mozilla mail accounts separately (so I selected a relatively small one). Wizard-style dialogues help you to set things up, and though as in any beta, there is obviously room left for improvements, I came across no serious issues so far. Let's see how the announced sharing and synchronization features will work.
