As you will have read elsewhere on the web by now, MSFT has announced to work on Internet Eplorer 7 for Windows XP SP2 as an independent product outside of Longhorn. This is a major shift in directions and comes in the very moment when even my mother would have asked whats wrong with MSFT: all you have heard of them for quite a while is bugfixes, bugfixes and security leaks and security leaks, while the company labours in silence on an ever-delayed Longhorn OS that presumably is intended to be the iron fist that solves the cruxial desktop vs. web OS question with a single strike. Cleary, the IE 7 announcement is reaction instead of action. It is a "we see us forced to move, hang in there, no need to switch, we will strike soon" message. Mozilla and the Web 2.0 industry should keep on firing.
