Automated tag clustering

Philipp Keller, mentioned here before for his work on (semantic) tagging, presents Automated Tag Clustering: Improving search and exploration in the tag space (PDF paper, PPT presentation). It is about the central question how relations between tags can be discovered. Having user-defined hierarchy fragments plus tag mining starting from these combined fragments could do the trick. Interestingly, the this concept is very similar to that of Peter Van Dijck's XFML, a proposed hierarchical faceted metadata standard that unfortunately never set off: one of its core principles is building connections between different XFML facetmaps. Semiautomatically building hiearchical or faceted views on your datastore is what I am playing around with for my personal photo management tool, too.
