Nifty hardware
Ultra portable USB hub by Dr. Bott KG - so that's a really cool device for the notebook user, sitting right on top of my buying list. Their stationary 4 port and 7 port powered hubs look pretty nice, too.
Apple Pro Keyboard, the coolest and best keyboard on earth, sitting right on second place of my buying list [with the list sorted by pratical need, not by emotional desire ;-)] Works perfectly on W2k systems, with the Apple Key performing automagically as a Window Key. Go away, lovelessly crafted, unstable, creeky, overpriced Logitech and Microsoft keyboards.
Stuff no-one really needs: Higoto USB powered Notebook Keyboard Light. Sitting nowhere on my buying list.

MySQL-Front is a nifty little tool. Too bad my web hoster does not allow external connections to the database server, so at least for this, I have to rely on well-known PHPmyAdmin, which for sure isn't bad either.

SOAP wars
One day, three oreillynet-articles on the SOAP/REST/XML-controversy:
Paul Prescod on xml.com: "In this article I demonstrate that Google's choice [of a SOAP API] was technologically poor, compared to that of eBay and Amazon [who offer XML/HTTP/URI-based API] . I will show that a Google API based on XML, HTTP and URIs can be simpler to use, more efficient, and more powerful." Meanwhile on another oreillynet-site, Clay Shirky lauds SOAP as "astonishingly far along."
So in his story, Marc Hedlund rounds this thing up and neither agrees with Paul nor Clay: "Speaking as a developer, I currently don't have any reason to care one way or another which path Google takes. Speaking as a technologist, I think the demand for REST in this case is driven more by aesthetics than practicality. Maybe it's really just anti-Microsoft. Speaking as a product manager-type, I would say Google should support the "platforms" with sufficient business demand. View SOAP as Windows and REST as Linux and XML-RPC as Mac and make decisions accordingly. Taking the three of these considerations in combination, I would say that there's no point in a business like Google investing in more than one Web services interface until there's money attached to use of the service; and all other things being equal, which they seem to be, I would bet on Microsoft (i.e. SOAP)."

Scott Andrew: "The idea behind REST is that the Web already has everything it needs to power XML-based, transactional Web services: HTTP-native actions such as GET, POST, PUT, DELETE, etc. (verbs), applied to a "potentially infinite set of nouns" (URIs). As a developer, probably the most obvious benefit I see is you don't need much to get started, no crazy tools, no SOAP::Client, etc. All you need is something that can handle HTTP and parse an XML payload. In other words, you need less glue."

Weekend Roundup, part II: Apache
Old news: "After three years of development, Apache 2.0 (or, more accurately, Version 2.035) has finally been released. Unix users will find plenty to like in Version 2.0, but the biggest impact will be on Windows servers, where Apache can now perform as a production-level Web server. Unlike previous Windows versions of the open-source server, which were built from ported Unix code, the new version is written as a native Windows application and is recommended by the Apache Software Foundation for production use." full text: eWeek.com: Apache 2.0 Beats IIS at Its Own Game
Apache modules, tools, applications can conveniently be found at apache-tools.com. There, I found the Sourceforge project Apache Management Console SnapIn for W2k/XP - nice idea! The project has released some MCC COM interface developer files yet. Of course, there still is the Covalent Comanche Open Source GUI for Apache that also can take care of your Samba.
Benchmarking: Remote Communications Inc. offers an improved version of the popular ab Apache Bench in a pre-compiled version for Windows. "This version adds complete support for IETF Content Decoding and HTTP 1.1 Chunked Transfer Decoding in order to allow the program to test any Server that is capable of providing reduced HTTP Content. When used in conjunction with any HTTP 1.1 compliant Server that is able to provide reduced content this version of ApacheBench will decode the content and provide both a RAW and a VIRTUAL byte transfer rate as well as other performance statistics", and their site show a nice example of the benefits HTTP 1.1 dynamic gzip compression can give you.
If you don't care for that but for a graphical Apache Bench frontend, check mappingsoft Apache OnHand, which is a self-proclaimed "Apache HTTP Server management and configuration tool for Windows" and offers a very helpful graphical analysis of AB results. For other benchmarks, see this and this tool. The first one is WebCheck, the other The Jakarta Project JMeter, a 100% java application (if you care for that) and pretty elaborate looking.
I really like mod_log_mysql which offers you the ability to log accesses to a MySQL database - and knowing about the power of SQL SELECT statements, this is a really good thing to have on testing server.

Weekend Roundup, part I: fucked
Time to kill. Having written 15 minutes on that "Weekend Roundup, part I: Apache" posting and having cut-and-pasted an dazzling, innumerable variety of links into it, my Opera 6.02 browser crashed - for the first time i use it, that is. Even under extremely heavy load, it normally runs perfectly stable. Normally. If the MTBF of this product is half a million hits, as it seems to be, no need to worry though. Of other applications, MTBF seems to be one sharp look.

Writing Portable SQL Code
Interesting story on writing portable SQL code in PHP using the ADOdb database abstraction layer. It currently supports MySQL, PostgreSQL, Interbase/Firebird, Oracle (Oci8), MS SQL 7, ADO, Foxpro, Access, Sybase, Sybase SQL Anywhere, DB2, Informix, Frontbase and generic ODBC - no need for porting your code again (?) Same site features interesting links on PHP advocacy (PHP vs. ASP, ColdFusion, Perl, JSP).

Vodafone: heiter bis schmierig
Vodafone will die 4500 verbliebenen Altaktionäre des früheren Mannesmann-Konzerns aus dem Unternehmen drängen. Möglich wird das Herausdrängen der Aktionäre aus dem Konzern (squeeze out) nach dem neuen Übernahmegesetz, das zum 1. Januar 2002 in Kraft getreten war. Die Barabfindung soll auf einer außerordentlichen Hauptversammlung im Juni beschlossen werden, berichtet heise.
Zwischenzeitlich zeigt sich Vodafone auf dem deutschen Mobilfunkmarkt betont erfolglos: das Weihnachtsgeschäft floppte, in Popularitätsumfragen stürzte die Marke ab, und das völlige Verschwinden des D2-Logos entwickelt sich zum Marketing-Desaster. Mit Desaster ist die Mega-Fusion insgesamt trefflich umschrieben: die wortbrüchtigen Briten verstanden es nicht nur, das ehemalige Glanz-und-Gloria-Unternehmen der deutschen Mobilfunkbranche zu einer x-beliebigen Telefonbude zu richten, auch und vor allem die Aufspaltung der ehemaligen Mannesmann Industriebetriebe ging gründlich in die Hose, berichtet das Manager Magazin.

On Googleboxes, Amazonboxes
Everything's coming up Web Services this week! First Google releases its Google Web API, and then Amazon presents its Amazons Associates XML interface: "By putting Amazon.com XML directly into your hands, you'll now have the flexibility to display dynamic product information in any way you choose." For a first simple application, see the right pane on Rael's site. Amazox is a simple Perl script making a call to the Amazon Associates XML interface and displaying the results in a table, suitable for inclusion in a Web page.
"The first simplistic applications of Google's API will predictably be 'Google Boxes,' relevant search results incorporated into portal and weblog pages. Google's API opens a dialogue with the developers and researchers inventing the next Internet and quite possibly shaping the future of Google itself. By exposing its cache of over 2 billion Web pages via simple Web services, the Google Web API is a breath of fresh air in a specification-dense yet implementation-sparse arena." (Rael)
"An interesting debate over the merits of the Amazon API versus the Google API: the Amazon API is dirt-simple to use; simply pass parameters to it via the URL, as you would any Web page, and you get the results back in pure XML (Simon St. Laurent points out that the Amazon API is very REST-like). Google, on the other hand, requires that a SOAP call to be fashioned and POSTed. It seems pretty laborious when you realize that there's nothing Google's giving us that couldn't be done via a URL. A SOAP interface makes more sense if you need to send and receive complex datatypes (something beyond a one-dimensional list of name-value pairs) to invoke a particular method over a network, but you have to question whether all that overhead is really necessary just to get a list of search results or spelling suggestions." New O'Reilly Books on PHP Web Development
Das Warten hat ein Ende, O'Reilly hat Bücher zum Thema PHP-Entwicklungn im Programm: Programming PHP, € 44, von Rasmus Lerdorf höchstselbst, und Web Database Applications with PHP & MySQL, € 48. Kein Grund also mehr, sich mit dem Schrott, den die anderen Verlage als Programmierliteratur verkaufen, abzugeben (empfehlenswerte Ausnahme: PHP and MySQL Web Development, € 64).
Als Kostproben gibt es zwei Kapitel, die sich mit zwei der wichtigsten Themen beschäftigen: Sessions und Arrays - recommended reading.

IBM to exit hard drive market
IBM has decided to exit the hard drive market citing the market has become too competitive. Analysts have pressured IBM to sell its HD business, which is part of its OEM technology group. IBM pointed to the OEM group last week as a reason for its poor first-quarter performance. Intention is to sell 70% of the HD business to Hitachi and to have 30% ownership of the resulting venture. The new company name is unknown.
With the new company intendend to develop open data-storage systems to take aim at industry leader EMC Corp, one has to wonder if the this move has anything to do with the highly troubled Deskstar GXP series, trouble around which left hefty scars on the businesses shiny image. One might also wonder if the 2,5"/notebook HD business will be sold, too, as IBM has a large share of this market. Also, hopefully the new company will continue IBM's intensive R&D efforts on increasing HD storage.
Brian Hayes of American Scientist has written a nice little historical review of hard drive technology, from the first hard drive (nice pic) made by IBM in 1956 to what may be available in 10-15 years.

Mozilla/Google API Demos
Scott Andrew has two demos "that use Mozilla's SOAP client functions to call the Google API via JavaScript. Currently two JavaScript functions exist: googleSearch() and spellingSuggestion(). Each function allows you to pass an auth key, parameters, and a JS callback to process the result. The result passed to the callback is an unparsed SOAP response object. Ray Whitmer's tutorial on SOAP scripts in Mozilla outlines the various pieces available in Mozilla to make SOAP calls. He also talks about ways to modify security restrictions so that scripts can invoke Web services outside of the source domain."

Google API roundup
What's it all about?
Google released a SOAP-driven Web API, allowing the user to programmatically query the Google search-engine from the comfort of his favourite programming language. That is, the vast amount of Google data can be accessed as if Google were a script running locally, and what comes back? Data, ready for processing, not a web page. So what is it good for? No one can tell yet. For sure, this is the first Web Service worth thinking about, and quite possible, it will not only shape the future of Google itself, but will have impact on how we use the Internet only the release of Netscape had before. General Threads and RessourcesImplementationsOdds and ends- Like always, Google introduces killer features without playing a single PR drum. The story didn't spread far from target audience journals like Slashdot: wired.com et al, generating much of the current noise around Web Services, didn't say a word, and can't do better than playing buzzword bingo.
- With the API, Google introduces Google Accounts, " the easy way to access all Google services that require a username and password. The initial service available with your Google Account is Google Web APIs - a tool for software developers to automatically query Google. In the future, your Google account will provide access to all Google programs requiring sign in including: Google Groups, Google AdWords, Google Store, Google in Your Language program."
- The former XML-interface is shut down. The new SOAP-based interface is limited to 1000 searches per day and 10 results per search - enough to demonstrate to developers the power of Google in their applications and making them upgrade their account to a more industrial strength version.
- Doing this, Google opens up a new way to earn money on the Internet: not making the standard (end-)user interface a pay-service, but billing the use the XML/SOAP-interface, which will most likely be mainly used by professional users. It will be interesting to see the pricing model Google will come up with.

David Hyatt präzisiert in seinem Weblog Confessions of a Mozillian: "Mozilla is now very close to releasing 1.0 of its browser suite, and as that day draws closer, the self-examinations and post-mortems are kicking into high gear. What did we get right? What did we do wrong? [...] My own source of personal angst is Mozilla's mediocre user interface. [...] The single biggest problem with Mozilla 1.0 as it stands today is that all of the applications (Composer, Chatzilla, Messenger, Netscape) are bundled together into a single monolithic app. In order to support this model, the front end code has been complicated immensely. [...] The end result of this rigid adherence to the mistakes of Netscape 4.x is the cluttered mess that is Mozilla 1.0. The solution is clear: after Mozilla 1.0, the apps should be disentangled from one another. Each app should run in its own process. User interface elements should have clearly defined roles." You guess it, recommended reading, too.

Kongolomerate: Neues von Paul Achleitner
"Die Protagonisten der neuen Deutschland AG, Allianz und Deutsche Bank, haben aus dem Mannesmann-Debakel gelernt. Sie wollen den Spagat schaffen: möglichst viel aus ihren zahlreichen Firmenengagements für sich herausschlagen und gleichzeitig sinnvolle unternehmerische Konzepte umsetzen.
Derzeit arbeitet das Duo an zwei Konstruktionsplänen für eine neue Industriestruktur.

Und dort, wo der Kurs seit Jahren nicht mehr hochkommt, stockt Achleitner auf oder paktiert mit anderen Großaktionären. So kann er mehr Druck auf den Vorstand ausüben, vielleicht selbst Hand anlegen und nach erfolgreichem Umbau richtig Kasse machen."

Zend or Zope or ...
Each time I command my hands to type "www.zend.com" into my browser to glimpse for some new PHP code snippets, they type "www.zope.com", which can be pretty annoying. However, today this leads me to the announcement that Zope (not Zend...) has a new site layout, which is plain and simple and nice and well done - and covering all pages but the home page. Huh, so what's the trick with this one...

Das ging schnell - bei freshmeat.net tauchte noch am gleichen Tag das neue Projekt Ruby/Google auf: Ruby/Google offers a higher-level abstraction of Google's SOAP-driven Web API. It allows the user to programatically query the Google search engine from Ruby. The aim of the library is to shield the programmer from the details of the raw data structures returned by the Web API, and in the process make the API more accessible for everyday use." Zwar stellt sich die Frage, wer in Ruby programmiert, aber Abstraction Layers auch für geläufige Sprachen werden wohl nicht lange auf sich warten lassen.

Liest man dieses Posting auf der Ruby-Talk-Liste, wird einem das schnelle Erscheinen des Abstraction Layers klar. Das Freshmeat-Projekt gehört einem gewissen Ian Macdonald - der wiederum Systemadministrator bei einer Firma namens Google, Inc. ist. Nun die Preisfrage: In welcher Sprache programmiert Google, Inc.?

IBM WebSphere Portal 4.1 angekündigt
"Zwei Monate vor dem eigentlichen Erscheinungsdatum kündigt IBM das WebSphere Portal 4.1 an. Mit der neuen Versionsnummer synchronisiert das Unternehmen das Portal mit dem Applikationsserver", berichtet Volker Weber heute im Heise News-Ticker (Detailbericht).
Interessante Hintergrundinformationen aus dem Artikel:
"Mit WebSphere Portal wird IBM den heiß umkämpften Markt der Enterprise-Portale weiter anheizen. Wegbereiter dieser Softwaregattung waren kleine Anbieter wie Epicentric und Plumtree. Während Epicentric von Anfang an auf Java Web Application Server setzte, baute Plumtree auf Microsoft-Technologien. Kürzlich kündigte jedoch auch Plumtree an, die Java Portlet Specification zu unterstützen.
Portalanbieter wie Epicentric und Plumtree kommen jetzt zunehmend unter Druck der Application-Server-Hersteller wie IBM und Bea Systems. Auch SAP ist von der Anwendungsseite her kommend mit SAP Portals in den Markt eingetreten. Während IBM und Bea seit längerem bereits hart um die Application Server konkurrieren, hatten IBM und SAP die Claims gegenseitig gut abgesteckt, hier -- IBM -- Datenbanken, Application Server, Middleware und dort -- SAP -- Anwendungssoftware. IPod noch schmucker
Für € 695 gibt es den IPod nun auch mit doppelter Festplattenkapazität von 10 GB. Die 5 GB-Variante wird weiterhin für € 532 angeboten. Beide kommen mit neuer Firmware, die neben persönlichen Equalizer-Einstellungen vor allem die Möglichkeit bietet, Kontaktinformationen zu speichern - allerdings gibt es z.b. hier bereits viel elegantere Software für den IPod, und das bereits in erstaunlicher Menge. Mit EphPod gibt es neben dem kommerziellen Mediafour XType nun auch kostenlose Software zum Betrieb des IPod mit Windows - womit es kaum mehr einen Grund gibt, keinen zu kaufen.

Supermärkte scheinen sich zu lohnen: WalMart ist mittlerweile - nach einer Wersteigerung von lässigen 25.000% gegenüber dem Eröffnungskurs der Aktie - mit einem Gewinn von einer knappen halben Milliarde Mark pro Jahr das aktuelle Forbes 500 Unternehmen Nummer 1 der USA. Sam Robson Walton, der derzeitige Konzernchef, verfügt über etwa 142 Milliarden Mark Privatvermögen und wird als einer der reichsten Männer der Erde gehandelt - am Hungertuch müssen die anderen Clan-Mitglieder mit Privatvermögen zwischen 18,5 und 18,8 Milliarden Dollar allerdings auch nicht unbedingt nagen. Die reichsten Europäer haben bekanntlich ebenfalls in Supermärkte gemacht: Theo Albrecht, Aldi Nord, 14,7 Milliarden Euro und Karl Albrecht, Aldi Süd, 12,6 Milliarden Euro.

Heute vor 25 Jahren: Buback ermordet
Es war der Beginn des wohl brutalsten Terrorjahres in der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik: heute vor 25 Jahren vor wurde der damalige Generalbundesanwalt Siegfried Buback von Terroristen der Roten Armee Fraktion auf offener Straße erschossen, weil er "direkt verantwortlich für die Ermordung von Holger Meins, Siegfried Hausner und Ulrike Meinhof" war, so die Kommandoerklärung der RAF. Ein Bericht der Süddeutschen Zeitung.
Dazu heute ebenfalls in der SZ: "Buback erschien uns verachtenswert" - ein Interview mit Klaus Hülbrock alias Mescalero über seinen als Mescalero-Brief bekanntgewordenen Buback-Nachruf, die RAF und die neuen Mächtigen.

Vielleicht ist es nicht nur für einen Angehörigen der 77er-Generation interessant festzustellen, daß nur die SZ dem Thema Platz eingeräumt zu haben scheint - bei dem Thema RAF steht die Vergangenheitsbewältigung ja auch noch aus.

Wirtschaftsforscher: Pleitewelle zeigt System der Deutschland AG am Ende
"Unter Deutschland AG verstehe man ein Netzwerk von Banken, Politikern und Industrie, das unter dem Beifall der Gewerkschaften dafür gesorgt habe, dass Großunternehmen nicht Pleite gehen. 'Die Ziele sind ehrenwert (Arbeitsplätze retten), eigennützig (Kapitalverluste vermeiden) und anrüchig (ausländische Interessenten von strauchelnden Unternehmen fern halten). Das funktionierte lange gut, jetzt aber nicht mehr'. "
Denn nach Einschätzung des Wirtschaftsforschers Rüdiger Pohl könnten die Pleiten wie derzeit Holzmann, Herlitz, Fairchild Dornier und möglicherweise auch Kirch auf einen gefährlichen Mangel an Kapitalreserven zurückzuführen sein, da die Unternehmen den Bankkredit als vorrangiges Mittel zur Risikoabdeckung nutzten, was sich die Banken in Zeiten weltweiten Wettbewerbs aber nicht mehr leisten können.

Fentum - Gegengift für verkrüppelte Outlook-Mails
Immer wieder bekommt man statt des erwarteten Mail-Anhanges nur eine Datei winmail.dat, wenn der Sender mit Outlook, Outlook Express o.ä. arbeitet und seine Mails im Rich Text Format (RTF) versendet - da man mit den Rich Text Informationen ja irgendwo hin muss, aber eigentlich nirgends hin kann, erstellt Outlook die Datei winmail.dat und schreibt diese Informationen dort hinein. Das muss einen als Benutzer richtiger Mail-Programme wenig stören - ärgerlich ist erst die Tatsache, daß Outlook auch Attachments mit in diese winmail.dat-Datei mischt, und dann ist für Nicht-Outlook-Benutzer guter Rat teuer: außer man kennt Fentun.
Fentun ein kostenloses Minitool, mit dem man die Datei winmail.dat öffnen und darin enthaltene Attachments bequem extrahieren kann. Die Website ist zwar vor ein paar Jahren stehengeblieben, und über Version 0.9.3 hat man es auch noch nicht gebracht, aber es funktioniert einwandfrei - und hat man das nur wenige kB große Programm in seinem Mailprogramm erst als Standardanwendung für *.dat-Dateien definiert, nerven einen Leute, die ihr Outlook immer noch nicht brauchbar konfigurieren können auch nicht mehr.

Window Sizer
Volker Weber writes: "Sizer is a freeware utility that allows you to resize any window to an exact, predefined size. This is extremely useful when designing web pages, as it allows you to see how the page will look when viewed at a smaller size. The utility is also handy when compiling screen-shots for documentation, using sizer allows you to easily maintain the same window size across screen grabs." It is one of those tools packing greatness into just a couple of k bytes. Mike Lin is another source of fine mini tools like the highly recommended Startup Control Panel and Startup Monitor. However, compared to Sizer, his Window Sizer is of very basic nature - but does not add another icon to the system tray.
