Und sonst? - Update
Short Welcome liefert einige wirklich sehenswerte Kurzfilme, auch wenn sie aus dem Kirchschen Archiv stammen und die ganze Sache auch noch von Tiscali gesponsort wird. Update: Uuups - daß das Ganze von Tiscali gesponsort wird, bedeutet im Wesentlichen, daß die Seite vom 1. Juli an "aus Sicherheitsgründen während eines technischen Umzugs offline" ist - und zwar für geschlagene 14 Tage. Noch Fragen, Kienzle? Stichwort Filme: Spin zählt wohl zu den besseren Flash-Filmchen. Immer schön aufs Männchen klicken. Ein lustiges Männchen scheint auch der Macher von malorama.de zu sein, und hirnverbr.antville.org meint, "der einzige Kopierschutz, der wirklich funktioniert, ist die Belanglosigkeit." Was genau bei den Schaukelriechern verbrannt ist, sei einmal dahingestellt.

Rettet die Killergiraffe!
Liebe SPIEGEL Online-Redaktion,
genau wie SPIEGEL Online eine vorzügliche Nachrichtenquelle ist, hat sich die Sektion "Panorama" mit der Zeit zu einer Spielwiese gewandelt, in dem Ihre Redakteure als Entspannung von und Gegenpol zum Verfassen anspruchsvoller Artikel ihrem Hang zu Bouvelard nachgehen können.
Bemerkenswert fand ich am 27. Juni die beiden direkt untereinander stehenden Artikel "Kuh fiel vom Himmel" und (sinngemäß) "Killergiraffe tötet sich selbst". Bemerkenswert, weil sich - insbesondere da die Artikel direkt nacheinander veröffentlicht wurden - man sich bildlich vorstellen konnte, welchen Spaß es den Redakteuren bereitet haben wird, solche Schlagzeilen zu verfassen, welch Freude sie erfahren haben werden, als sie das fertige Produkt dann im Browser sahen. Bemerkenswert, ob die Skurillitäten-Sammlung "Panorama" jetzt endlich doch ein dadaistisches Experimentierfeld wird - Kuh fiel vom Himmel, Killergiraffe tötet sich selbst. Mancher eher konservative Zeitgenosse mag auch nachgeschaut haben, ob er wirklich auf www.spiegel.de gelandet ist und nicht auf der Seite einer bekannten, eigener Einschätzung nach meinungsbildenden Tageszeitung und wird sich innerlich empört und "Jezt gehen sie aber zu weit!" gedacht haben.
Bemerkenswert aber vor allem, da die Killergiraffe nicht mehr da ist und der Artikel jetzt den seltsam gekünstelt und vor allem herausragend langweilig klingenden Titel "Die Giraffe, die Drogen und der Sprung von der Klippe" trägt. Soll das nun der treffende Titel einer (Boulevard)-Nachricht sein? Zu weit gegangen ist da eher der kontrollierende Redakteur, der so dem Autoren der ursprünglichen Überschrift und vor allem der Leserschaft gründlich den Spaß versaut hat.
Bitte, liebe SPIEGEL Online-Redaktion, gebt uns die Killergiraffe zurück.

The Museum of Modern Arts, now in Queens
MoMA QNS erlebte am 27. Juni seine große Eröffnung, und artnet.com findet "There's no reason to ever return to 53rd Street". Dort hatte die bekannte Manhattener Filiale, Touristenattraktion erster Güte, am 21. Mai für teilweisen Abriss und Umbau nach 73 Jahren geschlossen.
Für die nächsten drei Jahre ist die milliardenschwere Sammlung in der ehemaligen Swingline Staple Factory in Queens zu sehen. Die bereits vor drei Jahren gekaufte Halle sollte ursprünglich nur als Lager genutzt werden, in dem die auf 18 Standorte verteilten Schätze - ingesamt mehr als 100.000 Gemälde, Skulpturen, Drucke und Designerstücke - zentral zusammengeführt werden sollten. Dann fand man die Lage in direkter Nachbarschaft des Partner-Zentrums für Avantgarde-Kunst wohl doch recht attraktiv und entschloss sich nicht nur ein Lager, sondern ein komplettes Museum als Ersatz für MoMA Manhattan zu bauen. Bleibt die Frage: What do you get when you start with a 160,000-square-foot warehouse and apply some $50 million? - There's no reason to ever return to 53rd Street.

Kommt PISA nicht auf den Punkt?
Kaum sickerten erste Ergebnisse durch, jubelten die Ministerpräsidenten aus dem Süden der Republik: Pisa-E habe eindeutig bewiesen, dass unionsgeführte Länder die bessere Schulpolitik betreiben. Fast ebenso schnell verkündeten Ministerpräsidenten aus sozialdemokratisch regierten Ländern neue Wege, auch die Bundesbildungsministerin verlangt nun einheitliche Standards, regelmäßige Leistungsvergleiche und nicht weniger als eine "nationale Anstrengung".
"Alles Quatsch", behauptet hingegen Lorenz Borsche, der in der Buchbranche als Statistik-Guru bekannt ist. Er sieht in dem Anteil der geprüften Schüler mit Migrationshintergrund und ihre soziale Stellung den dominierenden, fast ausschließlichen Faktor, der die Ergebnisse beeinflusst. Aufgeführt in den Tabellen sind zum einen der Anteil der Testkandidaten "mit Migrationshintergrund", das heißt mindestens ein Elternteil ist Ausländer, und als Untergruppe diejenigen, bei denen zu Hause die Umgangssprache nicht die Landessprache, also die Pisa-Test-Sprache war. "Das ist doch ein Riesenhandicap, wenn ich zu Hause tagtäglich Kisuaheli spreche und in der Schule Testfragen auf Französisch beantworten soll", so Borsche, aber darauf wird in der Studie nur am Rande eingegangen.
Warum das nicht erkannt oder benannt wurde, erklärt Borsche so: "Mit einem solchen Ergebnis hätten sich die Pisa-Forscher doch arbeitslos gemacht. Am Faktor Immigration und dem sozioökonomischen Hintergrund können wir doch höchstens in Generationszeiträumen etwas ändern, vor 2012 brauchen wir gar nicht noch mal zu testen, da kommt sowieso nichts bei heraus. Oder dasselbe wie jetzt auch. Ich kann nicht wirklich glauben, dass aus Steuergeldern hoch bezahlte Forscher einen so maßgeblichen Faktor wirklich 'übersehen', es sei denn, sie wollten ihn übersehen." Das markanteste Ergebnis der Pisa-Studien wäre damit das Zeugnis für die Politik der vergangenen Jahrzehnte: Deutschland hat bei seiner Einwanderungspolitik und der Integration von Immigranten versagt.

Farewell, Thunderfinger - UPDATE
John Entwistle, Bassist der legendären Band The Who, ist tot. Nachrufe (SPIEGEL Online, BBC News) auf eine der faszinierendsten Persönlichkeiten des Rock'n'Roll. Die geplante Tour wird unterdessen stattfinden: als Erinnerung an den verstorbenen Bassisten.
Auch die verbliebenen Mitglieder der Grateful Dead kehren auf die Bühne zurück. Die beiden bereits ausverkauften Konzerte sollen unter dem Motto "Terrapin Station - A Grateful Dead Family Reunion" stattfinden. Die Band löste sich 1995 nach dem Tod von Jerry Garcia auf.

Das Spiel ihres Lebens - auch nur Logik
Wer ist denn nun am Ende schuld, wenn Deutschland, oder besser gesagt "WIR" nach 1954, 1974 und 1990 jetzt schon wieder Weltmeister werden? Wahrscheinlich ist das alles Logik. Zwischen dem ersten und dem zweiten Titel lagen 20 Jahre. Bis zum dritten WM Erfolg waren es nur noch 16 Jahre. Wir wären jetzt also wieder an der Reihe. Ja, und 2010 erneut. Und dann wieder 2014 und ab da dann immer. So gesehen hat der Franz Beckenbauer natürlich Recht gehabt mit seiner Prognose von 1990. "Wir werden auf Jahre hinaus unbesiegbar sein." Movable Type 2.2 is out
There are two large new features with this release: (1) TrackBack, a peer-to-peer framework for communication between weblogs, which can track cross-weblog conversations and discussions, provides remote content repositories, has password protection, IP banning, automatic RSS output, and email notification. (2) The system can now use a MySQL database for backend data storage, as an alternative to the Berkeley DB storage. Introducing Monday
The New York Times reported PwC Consulting announced yesterday that it was renaming itself "Monday" to try to distance itself from its parent, PricewaterhouseCoopers, as it prepared for an initial public offering. It's doing this, according to it's site, to "start fresh." I guess no one told them Sunday was the first day of the week in the Western Calendar, and Saturday night starts the Jewish week. They also want to "Do Good work be courageous get to the core of what really matters don't use punctuation"
In other news, the day Monday announced through a spokesperson that it was considering hiring a branding and identity firm to help prop up it's image. It's considering a nonsense word that doesn't associate it with a real world firm, like "Accenture."
And noone told them that in Germany, things that don't work right just from the beginning were proverbially produced on Mondays...

After discovering Aimee Man, K's Choice, The Indigo Girls, Ani di Franco, Natalie Merchant and Kristin Hersh (and, as far as bands are concerned, Hole and Dover), I came across another fabulous female artist today: check Linda Perry with her "Knock me out", featured on the The Crow - City of Angels Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. So, what does all this mean to my personal Greatest Female Artists Ever Top 5? What will happen to the standings of Anne Clark, Tori Amos and Patti Smith? Am I Rob, but didn't tell before? Macromedia Hires Jakob Nielsen
Okay, so let me get this straight. Jakob Nielsen, a self- penned usability “expert,” writes an essay that drags Macromedia and the Flash development community through the mud ("Flash: 99% bad"). Macromedia reads the essay, believes he must know something, 'cause he sure sounds pissed, so they form a partnership with the guy. Lesson learned: if you want to be awarded a fat contract with a major software company, bitch to high heaven about how bad their products are, then wait for them to show up at your door, with a fistfull of cash, asking what’s wrong. Hush money, no doubt.

RSS, Streams And Aggregation
Mark has a very interesting posting on RSS auto-discovery and an even more interesting follow-up, featuring More on RSS auto-discovery plus this important update to those postings. And it works. What it all is about? Jason tells: "Basically, you insert the following code: link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS" href="url/ to/rss/file" into your Web page and then all an RSS aggregator needs to do is check that Web page for your RSS feed instead of you having to provide the aggregator with a specific URL. Pretty slick really." However, he also names some concerns he subjects to discussion.

Prodding at the Limits of User-centred Design: If the present ratio of business research was ‘70% user needs and analysis to 30% business and market analysis’, what was needed was a ratio of 30:70 the other way. The business is hiding behind the user, offering findings about customers as a reason for conservative spending in research, says Martyn Perks.
Excuse-ability: Websites might be fun to use, but do they succeed? Will the customer make the right choices, and come back again and again? It is a problem that's made worse by the fact that everybody focuses on the customer, and little else, for answers - as captured by Brian Hadfield, UK managing director of IT company Unisys: 'The customer is not just king, but dictator.'
