RIAA against music sharing? Not anymore! They even host MP3 files now.
"With the legal file sharing service kazaa still online, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) today announced that it intends to offer the latest albums for download from riaa.org. The RIAA wishes to apologise for the heavy-handed manner in which the popular chinese site Listen4Ever was closed down, and would like to present the following items for free download as a token of its goodwill. Of course the list is relatively small, but please be patient - we expect to offer over 300 next week. We also intend to offer pre-released movies in the coming months."
RIAA site defaced again - now, it is host to an entire Linkin Park album in MP3 format, and the links even work. Interesting enough, this "press release" is up for several days now - some argue it might be a honeynet-style of trap set up by RIAA itself: download now and get sued later. With at least on major typo in the release text, we believe it to be hack though. Due to popular demand, RIAA website is de facto unavailable most of the time now.

Alt-Bundeskanzler Helmut Kohl verglich im privaten Gespräch mit anderen Abgeordneten Bundestagspräsidenten Wolfgang Thierse mit dem Nazi-Minister Göring: Im Anschluss an die Sondersitzung des Parlaments zur Hochwasserkatastrophe am vergangenen Donnerstag, so berichtet der SPIEGEL, nahm Kohl den zweithöchsten Repräsentanten des Landes in kleiner Runde ins Visier: "Das ist der schlimmste Präsident seit Hermann Göring", schimpfte Kohl beim Lunch im Bundestags-Restaurant - die Nazi-Größe war von 1932 bis 1945 auch Reichstags-Präsident. Thierse hatte zuvor in der Unions-Fraktion Empörung ausgelöst, weil er während der Rede von Kanzlerkandidat Edmund Stoiber sehr spät gegen rot-grüne Zwischenrufer eingeschritten war.
Mit am Tisch saßen Ex-Staatssekretär Willy Wimmer (CDU), Ex-Staatsminister Bernd Schmidbauer (CDU), der CDU-MdB Roland Pofalla und Ex-Wirtschaftsminister Helmut Haussmann (FDP), und keiner widersprach. "Ich kann Ihnen nur raten, sprechen Sie mich nicht auf dieses Thema an", reagierte Wimmer, die anderen wollen nichts gehört haben oder waren für Stellungnahmen nicht erreichbar. Kohl sorgte schon einmal auf diese Art für Aufsehen: 1986 hatte er Michail Gorbatschow mit Joseph Goebbels verglichen.

TightVNC 1.2.5 is out. TightVNC is a VNC distribution optimized for faster operation on slow network links. Also check out Tridia VNC. VNC Virtual Network Computing is highly popular not only in heterogeneous environments as there are server and viewer ports for even the most bizarre of operating systems. So if you want to remote control your Nokia 9000 from an Arcorn RISC OS and monitor that from your SGI Irix machine, VNC is your choice. We remote control a Windows 2000 machine from another Windows 2000 machine, though.

CVS
Chora is an interesting looking CVS Viewer fully implemented in PHP. Requires the Horde Application Framework - "a general-purpose web application framework in PHP" - to be installed, which in turn requires a whole bunch of additional PHP libraries. Currently, Chora seems to be the only PHP based CVS viewer available. Meanwhile in the field of CVS desktop integration for Windows, Tortoise CVS 1.0 final is out. "With TortoiseCVS you can directly check out modules, update, commit and see differences by right clicking on files and folders within Explorer. You can see the state of a file with overlays on top of the normal icons within Explorer." This, we consider a very neat solution.

CSS-DISCUSS ARCHIVES
Eric Meyer's css-discuss, "the world’s best mailing list on the subject of practical CSS layout" (Zeldman) now has a public archive. Eric removed all email addresses from the public archive, so it won't turn into a new harvest field for spambots. The former members-only archives no longer are. By the way, "both Eric Meyer and Jeffrey Zeldman are aliases of Vicki Wong, who in turn is but a fictional character developed by Amy Franceschini to disguise the fact that she’s really Eric Brooks. Heather Champ is Steven Champeon, who’s actually an AI program developed at M.I.T. and housed on 14 mainframes", Zeldman discloses the doppelgangers secret. Jakob Nielsen will somehow profit from all of it.

Mannesmann-Affäre: Esser schwer belastet, fühlt sich missverstanden
"Mit einer neuen rechtlichen Bewertung habe die Düsseldorfer Staatsanwaltschaft die Beschuldigten in der Mannesmann-Affäre in Bedrängnis gebracht, berichtet das Nachrichtenmagazin Spiegel in seiner kommenden Ausgabe. Die Abfindungen für Ex-Konzernchef Klaus Esser und Kollegen seien keine Prämien für Leistungen, die mit anderen Managergehältern verglichen werden könnten. [...] Vielmehr handele es sich um Prämien für kooperatives Mitwirken bei der Übernahme von Mannesmann durch Vodafone. Die Aufsichtsratsbeschlüsse seien somit nicht im Interesse des Unternehmens, sondern ausschließlich im Interesse der Begünstigten erfolgt. Insgesamt flossen nach der Übernahme von Mannesmann rund 250 Millionen Mark an Prämien und Abfindungen an Manager und Pensionäre.
[...] Esser hatte im Zusammenhang mit den gegen ihn gerichteten Ermittlungen Ende Juli das Land Nordrhein-Westfalen verklagt. [...] Wegen 'massiver Rufschädigung' fordert der Manager Schmerzensgeld in Höhe von mindestens 100.000 Euro und Schadenersatz für die entstanden Anwaltskosten in Höhe von ebenfalls 100.000 Euro. [...] Er könne absolut nicht verstehen, dass die Staatsanwaltschaft sich mit dem Fall befasse, sagte Esser in [einem Welt am Sonntag Interview]: 'Ich halte es nach wie vor für richtig, dass man Vorstände erfolgsorientiert bezahlen soll, nach dem, was sie für Aktionäre und Mitarbeiter erarbeitet haben. Wer aber seine eigene sozialpolitische Anschauung mit den Mitteln staatsanwaltschaftlicher Verfolgung und Rufschädigung durchsetzen will, missbraucht das Monopol des Staates'."

CDU Fuldatal: Mit "Judenvernichtung", "Blitzkrieg", "Lenin" und "Stalin" auf Besucherfang
"Im Quelltext der Website der CDU im nordhessischen Fuldatal (Kreis Kassel) findet sich eine bunte Ansammlung von weit über 300 Schlüsselwörten, mit denen man offenbar Besucher über Suchmaschinen auf die Seite locken wollte: einmal als so genannte Meta-Tags, die von Suchmaschinen ausgewertet werden, einmal auch als normale, aber unsichtbare Liste von Wörtern. Enthalten sind Begriffe von der Anti-Baby-Pille über Blitzkrieg, Endsieg, Sex, bis zu Quantenmechanik, Überbevölkerung und Zeppelin. Inhaltlich bot die Seite allerdings nichts dergleichen, sondern bloß mäßig aufregende Bilder von Vorstand und Gemeindevertretern sowie ein bisschen Wahlkampf.
'Unser Webmaster wollte es besonders gut machen und hat als Schlagworte Begriffe eingegeben, nach denen besonders oft gesucht wird', bestätigte Ortsverbandschef Günter Hochapfel am Freitag einen Bericht der Hessischen/Niedersächsischen Allgemeinen (HNA). Nach Protesten ist die fragwürdige Liste zwar am Donnerstag gelöscht worden, sie lässt sich allerdings noch in der archivierten Fassung bewundern."

Knoppix 3.1 in beta stage
Just some days after the release of Knoppix 3.0, a beta version of Debian testing+unstable based Knoppix 3.1 is now available. Featuring kernel 2.4.19-rc3-xfs, KDE 3.0.2 and GNOME 2, it is the first major feature update after version 2.2. According to the changelog, version 3.0 was a special release for the German Information Security Agency (Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik BSI) - essentially, a version 2.2 with some "BSI-specific changes". Knoppix 3.1 final is expected to arrive before September 14.
Knoppix is a fully functional and usable Linux system running completely from a single bootable CD without requiring a hard disc or hard disc access due to on-the-fly decompression.

Accenture convened a diverse cross-spectrum of road analysts and best chickens along with Accenture consultants with deep skills in the transportation industry to engage in a two-day itinerary of meetings in order to leverage their personal knowledge capital, both tacit and explicit, and to enable them to synergize with each other in order to achieve the implicit goals of delivering and successfully architecting and implementing an enterprise-wide value framework across the continuum of poultry cross-median processes. The meeting was held in a park-like setting, enabling and creating an impactful environment which was strategically based, industry-focused, and built upon a consistent, clear, and unified market message and aligned with the chicken's mission, vision, and core values. This was conducive towards the creation of a total business integration solution. Accenture helped the chicken change to become more successful.
