I won't make it a habit to announce my eBay sales here on the weblog, but this might be of interest to some of you:
For sale is a Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2002 Professional/Academic (eBay Germany). The boxed set comes with a whole bunch of CDs including Windows XP Professional and a book on .NET. The package is new and unused - I have no use for it.

ACCEPTANCE SPEECH MP3 AUDIO FILE
You have to hear Michael Moore's Oscar acceptance speech (MP3, 680 kB).
Thanks Heiko for pointing me to the file.
ACCEPTANCE SPEECH TRANSCRIPT
On behalf of our producers Kathleen Glynn and Michael Donovan from Canada, I'd like to thank the Academy for this.
I have invited my fellow documentary nominees on the stage with us, and we would like to - they're here in solidarity with me because we like nonfiction.
We like nonfiction and we live in fictitious times.
We live in the time where we have fictitious election results that elects a fictitious president.
We live in a time where we have a man sending us to war for fictitious reasons.
Whether it's the fictition of duct tape or fictition of orange alerts we are against this war, Mr. Bush.
Shame on you, Mr. Bush, shame on you.
And any time you got the Pope and the Dixie Chicks against you, your time is up.
Thank you very much.
Moore later: "Don't report that there was a split decision in the hall because five loud people booed."
BACKSTAGE PRESS CONFERENCE VIDEO COVERAGE
Martin pointed me to the video coverage of Moore's backstage press conference (Windows Streaming Media, 12 minutes) at Moorewatch.com. This is a must see. See and listen to a man who stands up. Transcript follows as soon as available.
OTHER VOICES?
United Press International: " The audience [...] might have heard even more political speeches from the podium, but academy officials insisted that only Oscar winners - not presenters - would have the freedom to speak their minds on the show."

AND IT'S FRIDAY
"March 13, 2003 - With U.S. and British troops poised to invade Iraq, the rest of the world is overwhelmingly opposed. Yet Saddam Hussein is generally seen as a tyrant who must be disarmed and the United Nations Security Council has unanimously demanded that he disclose and destroy his weapons of mass destruction. What has gone wrong? [...]
I see a parallel between the Bush administration's pursuit of American supremacy and a boom-bust process or bubble in the stock market. Bubbles do not grow out of thin air. They have a solid basis in reality but reality is distorted by misconception. In this case, the dominant position of the US is the reality, the pursuit of supremacy the misconception. Reality can reinforce the misconception but eventually the gap between reality and its false interpretation becomes unsustainable. During the self-reinforcing phase, the misconception may be tested and reinforced. This widens the gap leading to an eventual reversal. The later it comes, the more devastating the consequences."

William Pfaff in an Guardian comment, and note the use of the past perfect: "Something has happened that might be compared with the breakup of the Austro-Hungarian empire in 1918. [...] The American superpower has been the centre of a solar system. Centrifugal political forces now have been set loose. These will be extremely difficult for Washington to deal with, so long as it remains on its global course. They may also prove more dangerous than Washington, or anyone else, now thinks."

Both Robin Cook, the leader of the British government in the House of Commons and very senior figure, and Lord Philip Hunt, the British Health Minister, resigned as a war against Iraq looks increasingly certain to break out in the next few days. "I can't accept collective responsibility for the decision to commit Britain now to military action in Iraq without international agreement or domestic support," said Cook. Lord Hunt: "At the end of the day I don't support this action and it would be hyprocritical for me to stay in government."
UPDATE I
John Denham, a Home Office minister who has also served in the Department of Health, followed Cook and Hunt. He said in a statement he could not support the government in a vote later on Tuesday about whether to wage war on Iraq, when Blair will face a major rebellion from within his ruling Labour party.

The RSS Feed Reader Directory has been updated: Radio Userland and the Python Desktop Server as existing solutions have been added for the sake of completeness. SNARF! is a new feed reader that integrates into the Internet Explorer sidebar/searchbar. Everything lives on the remote server and nothing has to be installed on the local system. While an interesting approach, SNARF! still seems to be in an early stage.

A very fine day to spend in Boston, MA and at the Cape (and greetings go out to the Chase family in Sudbury, MA). Pilot and crew of this site will spend the day in Dortmund, Germany though - Limericks pub will make a poor substitute.
Christopher Allbritton is a former Associated Press (AP) correspondet and New York Daily News reporter who turned to independent journalism. He chose Iraq and the foreign policy of the Bush Administration as his subject - and puts what he has in a weblog that is excellent reading.
Christopher: "This summer [2002] I went stumbling around Iraqi Kurdistan, the northern part of Iraq outside Saddam's direct control, looking for stories. (Some might call it 'looking for trouble.') Well, now I want to go back in time for the war. So I'm asking your help in supporting independent journalism! Send me back to Iraq to report on what's happening" in the Back to Iraq 2.0 blog. Wired Magazine has a background story.
He also has two stories on the US army's announcement to shoot at independent journalists. One reason more not to trust this Administration - and to support independent journalism.

Antwort: "Ich weiss es nicht. Dazu aber mein Currywurst-Theorem: There is no free Currywurst. Muss ich meine Currywurst bezahlen? Ja. Müssen alle anderen ihre Currywurst bezahlen? Klar.

"Mitchell D. Kapor, a personal computer industry software pioneer and a civil liberties activist, has resigned from the board of Groove Networks after learning that the company's software was being used by the Pentagon as part of its development of a domestic surveillance system. Mr. Kapor would say publicly only that it was a 'delicate subject' and that he had resigned to pursue his interests in open source software.
'Mr. Kapor resigned from the board to focus 100 percent of his time on nonprofit activities,' said a spokesman for Groove Networks, whose software has been used to permit intelligence analysts and law enforcement officials to share data in tests of the surveillance system, Total Information Awareness.
However, a person close to Mr. Kapor said that he was uncomfortable with the fact that Groove Networks' desktop collaboration software was a crucial component of the antiterrorist surveillance software being tested at the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency's Information Awareness Office, an office directed by Vice Adm. John M. Poindexter."

"Beginning today, we are also be releasing nightly builds of Movable Type, based on CVS snapshots." And this is good for the both the community and the product, because "by releasing changes to the software more often, we hope to make our stable releases even more stable than they are currently," and "by opening up new features and hooks to developers, we will be giving them more time to implement new plugins before official releases."

you are my number one: my first visitor who tried to log into my Movable Type installation. It is surprising that no one tried earlier. The path isn't very hard to guess, and each week there are dozends attempts to break through my Client Extranet login page. Still, for MT, you are the first. But look what you did:

Note to Movable Type users
Keep in mind that MT comes with mt_check.cgi, a script that checks your server and reports if the machine meets all requirements to install MT. But as finding the path to the file normally isn't very hard, it might also tell others more about your server than you might like. In this case, just delete is: once your MT installation is up and running, you don't need mt_check.cgi any more.
