(Hatte kürzlich ja dankenswerterweise Gelegenheit, Großformat auszuprobieren. Ein Mal unter dem Tuch alleine mit dem Motiv gewesen, ein Mal sich per Frontstandarte den Horizont parallelverschoben haben, und man ist für herkömmliches Fotografieren erstmal versaut; Kippen der Kamera erzeugt dann fast schon körperlichen Schmerz. Das wird noch in der Werkstatt enden.)

¡Adiós, La Cucaracha!
Da geht man mal eine Weile nicht in seinen Lieblings-Cocktailschuppen, schon ist die Bude dicht, und zwar final. Jetzt wird es also langsam eng mit guten Cocktails in Dortmund, denn das Cuca hatte Atmosphäre, fähige Barkeeper, einen klasse Garten im Innenhof, ungekünstelten Anspruch und solide lange Öffnungszeiten - alles Eigenschaften, die man vielen der anderen Einrichtungen, die sich ebenfalls Cocktailbar nennen, nicht unbedingt nachsagen kann. Immerhin hat sich zwischenzeitlich der andere Laden des Cucaracha-Betreibers brauchbar entwickelt.
Zu tun hat das Ende mit dem ziemlich dubiosen Bauprojekt, in dem das allerbestens gelegene Schmuckstück von Brau-und-Brunnen-Konzernverwaltung, das seit dem Ruin der Firma leersteht, auf wirklich allerletzten Drücker binnen nur Wochen zu einem Luxushotel für die Fußball-WM umgebaut werden soll. Wieder eine Ecke mehr verschandelt.

Garden Foundry (Reloaded)

Foundry for gray and ductile graphite iron, owner-operator style. There is a cupola furnace inside the taller grey structure to the right. Looks dead? The open bleeder on top of the furnace tells that it actually is so - a sight not uncommon in the Ennepe valley which used to be jam-packed with foundries and forges. (An open bleeder on an operating larger furnace can be quite fun.)

SlimStat web stats analyser
I've been using Google Analytics for a short while, but then realized that it loads way to much JS code into your browser, records your visits in a way too detailed manner and that it hides the interesting parts of the analysis beneath a thick cloud of marketing speak and stupid little charts - including a pie chart that plots two (!) values.
Enter Stephen Wettone's SlimStat: a PHP script that sits on your server and that gets called via a PHP include in your pages; slick, fast, realtime, and with a no-frills interface that let's you
filter by anything and everything, and combine criteria in any way you choose.
Seeing, for example, the pleasant fact that not a single reader that came here yesterday from spreeblick.de did use Internet Explorer requires just a few clicks. The screenshots give you a pretty good idea on these drill-down features. Also see Reducing SlimStat's database size. In use here for two weeks now and recommended.

"Wettlauf der Schäbigkeiten"
Sabine Rückert in der ZEIT mit einem langen, aber lesenswerten Artikel zu einer bedenklichen Entwicklung: der fortwährenden Verschärfung des deutschen Strafrechts weg vom gesellschaftlich vorteilhaften Resozialisierungsgedanken hin zum stumpfen Wegschließen, initiiert von wenig themenaffinen Politikern, die kaum noch wissenschaftlichen Rat abwägen, sondern sich von Einzelfällen und Medienhysterie treiben lassen und nicht zuletzt, um Langsamkeit der Apparate und Justizfehler einfach auf die Beschuldigten abwälzen zu können.

HTML DOM-Trees as Graphs
There are quite a few graph tools that visualize the structure of an entire website. htmlgraph is one that visualizes the structure of the HTML DOM-tree of a single page. What makes it interesting is that it color-codes the different HTML elements:
blue: for links (the A tag)
red: for tables (TABLE, TR and TD tags)
green: for the DIV tag
violet: for images (the IMG tag)
yellow: for forms (FORM, INPUT, TEXTAREA, SELECT and OPTION tags)
orange: for linebreaks and blockquotes (BR, P, and BLOCKQUOTE tags)
black: the HTML tag, the root node
gray: all other tags

Arcelor: Surprise, Surprise (Updated)
Während die Herren Mittal im globalen und Großmann im nationalen Maßstab mit Plan und Verstand zukaufen und etwas bilden, das wirklich mehr ist als die Summe der Einzelteile, wirkt Arcelor wie ein großer wilder Haufen - groß zwar, aber mit wenig Aussicht darauf, trotz ständiger Umstrukturierung aus eigener Kraft etwas Wohlstrukturiertes zu werden. Mittal will den Laden feindlich übernehmen, und die Chancen stehen gut, daß unter seiner Führung etwas Vernünftiges dabei herauskommen könnte. Aber Führung abgeben? Nix gibt's, sagt Areclor, versucht mit Händen und Füßen abzuwehren - und jetzt: Weißer Ritter Severstal.
Severstal, das ist in erster Linie die größte Hütte Russlands, mit fast abgeschlossener Umstellung von SM- auf LD-Stahl und sogar eigener Erz- und Kohlenbasis, die gut die Hälfte der 10 Millionen Jahrestonnen exportiert und mit Arcelor bereits im Feinblechbereich zusammenarbeitet. Alles, bloß nicht Mittal. Und es scheint, als könnte der Plan aufgehen, Mittal hätte in Europa dann ein Problem. Aber zu welchem Preis? Auf Grund der bisher zersplitterten Kapitalstrukturen würde sich der Machtpol des Konzerns wohl deutlich von Luxemburg in Richtung Moskau verlagern, ohne daß der neue Herr im Hause Aussicht auf langfristige strukturelle Verbesserung böte - vom Regen in die Traufe also. Alles, bloß nicht Mittal. Ob die Arcelor-Führung hier im besten Interesse des Konzerns handelt? Wohl kaum.

Unusual variegation has filled these pages recently, so it's time to take a break and return to something I've neglected for quite a while now: black and white.

Exciting Virtual Earth UK Update
We all love satellite maps in our browsers, but now it's getting really exciting: bird's eye views, available now for parts of the UK, brought to you by Microsoft Virtual Earth. Let's have a look: aerial view, bird's eye view. Or: aerial view, bird's eye view. Or: aerial view, bird's eye view. Bright, crisp and clear. This rocks hard, indeed:
I just made a bird's eye view tour along River Thames, and within minutes, it gave me a much better impression of the region than any other visual medium could do. In those few minutes I also found more interesting photo spots than hours of evaluating standard aerial photos or probably days of evaluating maps would return. It is a safe bet that such data, once it becomes available for larger areas, will fundamentally change the way we choose travel destinations and homes. Obviously, it opens up whole new opportunities for urban and industrial explorers, too.
Also in the recent update: decent satellite images of the entire United Kingdom in your browser - finally. Google Maps doesn't have them, Microsoft Virtual Earth does. Examples: Port Talbot Integrated Steel Works (quite a beauty), Scunthorpe Integrated Steel Works, Redcar Steel Works and Rolling Mills, Redcar Blast Furnace and Coke Plant, Redcar Chemicals. Nice.
Notes: When zooming in, the satellite photo quality seems to get worse and worse - keep on zooming in. Once zoomed in far enough, the high quality photos will be displayed. The zoom slider does not work well in my Firefox. The +/- buttons do, though, and nicely enough, double clicking zooms in, too.

Lordi (Updated)
Ich habe keinen DVBT-Empfänger. Mein Uralt-TV hat nichtmals einen Scart-Eingang. Folglich kann ich nur noch ARD empfangen. Macht nichts, viel mehr als Tatort und Tagesthemen schaue ich eh nicht. Heute aber: Masochistischer Selbstversuch. Grand Prix de Eurovision. Grottig. Die "Musik". die Einspieler. Der "Moderator". Sogar die Bildschirmschriftarten. Aber wie arschcool ist es denn bitte von Finland, Lordi loszuschicken? Mit der besten Parodie auf Finnenrock ever obendrein? Finland, 12 points!

Hirsi Ali ausgebürgert
Es ist eine Katastrophe: Rita Verdonk, Hollands Hardcore-Ministerin für Einwanderung und Integration, will Ayaan Hirsi Ali, die Parlamentarerin, der der religiös motivierte Mordanschlag auf Theo van Gogh eigentlich galt, ausbürgern. Die überaus couragierte Kämpferin gegen den fundamentalistischen Islam will daher in den USA Asyl ersuchen. FAZ-Story, Spiegel-Story, Hintergund zu Person und Werk auf Literaturkritik.de.
In Holland eine wildgewordene Ex-Gefängnischefin, die bestens integrierte Bürger aus der Gesellschaft schmeißt. In Belgien ein Jugendlicher, der wahllos eine ausländische Frau und ein von ihr betreutes Kleinkind erschießt - seine Tante, extremistische Einheizerin der bestimmenden Rechtspartei Vlaams Belang, weist freilich jeden Vorwurf geistiger Brandstiftung weit von sich. Und in den neuen Bundesländern werden aus dem Ausland stammende Deutsche gelyncht, Jugendliche und Obdachlose von brauen Dumpfbacken gefoltert, "ausländerfreie Zonen" proklamiert und in den Fußballstadien antisemtische Gesänge angestimmt. Was zum Teufel läuft hier eigentlich für ein Film?

3D-Modelle historischer industrieller Anlagen: der Anfang ist gemacht

3D-Volumenmodelle historischer industrieller Anlagen sind zur Dokumentation eine feine Sache, und jetzt, wo es mit Google Earth einen passenden de facto-Standardbrowser mit hinreichend breiter Installationsbasis gibt, war es nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis im 3D Warehouse erste entsprechende Modelle auftauchen: Achim Trommen, der die empfehlenswerte Site foerdergerueste.de (Fördergerüste im Ruhrbergbau 1850 - 1960) betreibt, hat mit einem Teilmodell "seines" Pütts, dem großteils abgerissenen Bergwerk Niederberg in Neukirchen-Vluyn, den Anfang gemacht (noch eher gab es ein Modell des Bochumer Bergbaumuseums, aber das ist eher eine grobe Anlehnung).
Erstes Hochofenmodell oder LD-Konvertermodell, anyone? Wer Lust hat: die Abmessungen von Hochofen 7 der Westfalenhütte, des Phoenix-Oxygenstahlwerks und einiger anderer Anlagen liegen ziemlich komplett vor.
Außerhalb des Google-Gardens gibt es natürlich eine Reihe ähnlicher Projekte, die jedoch oft nicht im Netz vertreten oder nicht direkt für die Öffentlichkeit bestimmt sind, so zum Beispiel:
- Eine Gruppe um einen Vermessungsingenieur vermisst in privater Initiative die umfangreichen untertägigen Anlagen eines stillgelegten integrierten Hüttenwerkes und setzt die Messwerte in ein Datenmodell um, das u.a. bei der Flächensanierung zum Einsatz kommt
- Aus zumeist aus Bau- und Katasterplänen abgeleitenten Daten und Fotos aller Gebäudeflächen wurde ein 3D-Modell der Tagesanlagen der Dorstener Hoesch-Zeche Fürst Leopold (Foto, Foto, Foto, Foto) erzeugt, das als Besonderheit auch bauliche Veränderungen auf einer Zeitachse erfasst. So dient es nicht nur der Dokumentation der Anlagenteile, die demnächst abgerissen werden werden, sondern kommt auch bei der Vermarktung der Gebäude, die für eine Folgenutzung erhalten bleiben sollen, zum Einsatz: Jetzt- und Dannzustand in einem Modell.
- Vor Abriss des Stahlwerks der Henrichshütte wurde die gesamte Anlage nicht nur von innen und außen professionell auf Großformat abgelichtet, sondern auch von innen komplett laservermessen. Das abgeleitete Datenmodell ermöglicht wissenschaftliche Arbeit an und virtuelle Besichtigungen in der wider aller Vernunft abgerissenen Anlage, die aus industriedenkmaltechnischer Sicht absolut einmalige Möglichkeiten bot.
(Der letzte Beispiel hat freilich eine Kehrseite: in NRW scheint es sich einzubürgern, den Denkmalschutz von Industriedenkmälern weitgehend komplikationsfrei und binnen kürzester Zeit aufzuheben und Abrissvorhaben zu genehmigen, wenn der Eigner des Objektes verspricht, eine Dokumentation des Ist-Zustandes zu erstellen und diese früher oder eher später auszugsweise der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen. Aktuelles Beispiel: die historischen Kesselhäuser des Cuno-Kraftwerks in Herdecke.)
