Coke oven gas in various degrees of purity is a product as important as the coke itself. Byproduct and derivates winning has lost most of its importance, though: while in older plants like this dozens of different byproducts have been won, modern plants are targeted at winning as few of them as possible.

Berliner Schande
Angststarre, Duckmäusertum und vorauseilender Gehorsam, es ist ein schleichender Prozess, und er macht auch vor Chargen, von denen man eigentlich etwas Courage erwarten düfte, nicht halt: so ist jetzt die Führung einer öffentlich finanzierten Kulturinstitution eingeknickt vor der vermeindlichen Bedrohung durch Kandidaten, die absichtlich alles falsch verstehen. Wie verwundbar ist eine Gesellschaft, wenn ihre kulturelle Elite schon beim kleinsten Windhauch nicht für ihre Grundwerte eintritt; wie verhält es sich bei Sturm?

Leica Camera AG, Solms, takes over 51% of the shares of Sinar AG, Feuerthalen/Switzerland, from JENOPTIK Laser, Optik, Systeme GmbH, Jena ("JENOPTIK"). [...] The existing technical cooperation between JENOPTIK and Sinar AG concerning digital camera backs will be continued. [...] Leica Camera AG will continue and develop the Sinar business with the Sinar brand and company structure. [...] This is a first step on the strategic path towards growing the business of Leica Camera AG.

Time to shift the line of defense from blogging software level to domain level.

(Now if there is a boring waste of time, is it camera talk. It might be OK if it is done from a systemic point of view, but basically, bodies are completely overrated as long as they are doing what are supposed to do, that is not standing in the photographer's way. If there is something to talk about, it is lenses and lighting. Still, from time to time we need something to drool over. Hence this posting. And while the 645D is primarily of interest as a decisive factor for an entire market segment, this would be my choice if I had some serious money to get rid of: a Cambo UltimaDS Digital with Schneider Digitar glass and an adequate digital back)

Samstag: Schautag Chemie
Die Chemieindustrie feiert diesen Samstag bundesweiten Tag der Offenen Tür, über 250 Werke nehmen teil. Eine Liste aller teilnehmenden Betriebe gibt es auf schautag-chemie.de. Chemiewerke sind ja nicht nur für den Laien sehr faszinierend: ziemlich viele Rohre, rund ums Jahr Festbeleuchtung, hier ein Zischen, da ein Dampfen, es tut sich wenig für das Auge Sichtbare, aber am Ende kommen doch 500 Tonnen Irgendwas heraus. Auch wenn das Ganze je nach Standort eher Volksfestcharakter haben wird, dürfte sich die Teilnahme mancherorts lohnen: laut Beschreibung stehen bei einigen Betrieben nämlich nicht nur die branchenübliche Busrundfahrt über das Werksgelände auf dem Programm, sondern auch Führungen durch ausgewählte Produktionsbetriebe.

A: Mostly on my return. Too detailed planning obscures the view. Getting a paper map of a local publisher upon arrival, "reading" area characteristics, instinct, experience, curiosity and luck normally do the trick. I just walk and drive around.

Why do I post this quote?
- Because it answers a question I get asked quite often: "Where are all your photos? You should show more." They are in the archives. Taking them is what counts, and the moments, days or years of preparation it takes to get there. Anything after that, like putting them on a website or selling them or drooling over their historic value to come or not to come, is secondary, at most.
- Because I found it on Alex Soth's blog which I want to recommend on this way.

Judged by excellent paper specs and what is known from Pentax bodies so far, the new Pentax K10D is something you should have on your radar when it comes to picking a DSLR camera system. Can't wait to test drive it.

Gaukler mit fünf Bällen in der Luft
Das mit den Serien über Häuser, Swimmingpools oder Gräbern, das habe ich irgendwann alles einmal probiert und festgestellt, dass das alles unheimlich künstlich ist. Diese selbstgesetzten Themen sind immer Sammelthemen und Sammelthemen sind für mich ein Ausdruck von Einfallslosigkeit. Du kannst zum Beispiel auch alle Einarmigen oder alle Tätowierten fotografieren. Die Bibliotheken sind bereits jetzt schon voll mit solchen Büchern und sie sind in Wirklichkeit nicht gut. Die ganz klare Wahrheit ist, ein Oeuvre muss ein Durchschnitt sein von Dingen, die für einen interessant sind. Interessante Bilder kann man back to back drucken, da braucht man gar keine Dramaturgie. Der Einzige, der wirklich ein Thema am Wickel hat, ist James Nachtway. Wir sind doch alle Gaukler mit fünf Bällen in der Luft. Wenn ich ein Buch von James Nachtway anschaue, sitze ich ganz klein unterm Tisch und möchte am liebsten nie wieder eine Kamera anfassen.
Mit Photographeninterviews sollte man eigentlich nicht zu viel Zeit vertrödeln, tut es es ab und zu aber natürlich trotzdem (gibt ja schließlich auch gute). Heute also Jim Rakete →
