Deutsche Edelstahlwerke
That was quick: Just wanted to take screenshots of the homepages of the Edelstahl Witten Krefeld and Stahlwerke Südwestfalen websites, but on the web, the 1st of January merger into Deutsche Edelstahlwerke (German Stainless Steel Works) has already been made.
That name sounds familiar? Right: between 1927 and 1974, it specified a group of companies to which the two companies that form today's Deutsche Edelstahlwerke have been added in 1974 and 1975. After Bochumer Verein, that's the second recent case in which a traditional steel company name gets revived.
The new company belongs to Schmolz & Bickenbach, a previously rather small company that after a series of interesting moves now also owns, entirely or in majority of shares, Swiss Steel and Ugitech, likely making it the world's largest producer of long stainless steel products (company structure, facilities).

Going large
What do view cameras, military actions and, let's say, a good old contract killer with an attitude have in common? - Fire discipline. Without, you won't get far. I am just in the testing phase, but what you learn immediately is that the view camera is a harsh mistress. Painful even before it has really started and on each error, but so rewarding in the end. And for some kind of photos, the only tool there is.

I've replaced the troublesome Magpie RSS Parser with the fast and well-built SimplePie Parser: page load times of this blog should be back to normal, and the QuickLinks section in the sidebar is working again still does does not work is working again.
UPDATE
SimplePie requires cURL 7.10.5 or fresher. If an older version is present, it falls back to using fsockopen() instead. 1&1 has 7.10.3 installed, so fsockopen came into play, which at 1&1 web hosting works for a while and then again not. Simply changing "7.10.5" into "'7.10.3" in simeplie.inc's line 2154 does the trick. While 7.10.3 is a version officially not supported, things seems to work smoothly nonetheless.

Ruhrnachrichten kündigt Fotografen
Nach Auskunft der Gewerkschaft Ver.di ist in Dortmund allen Fotografen der Tageszeitung Ruhr Nachrichten gekündigt worden. Betroffen sind die Mitarbeiter der Redaktionen in Selm, Lünen, Castrop-Rauxel, Witten, Schwerte und Dortmund. Nach Angaben der Gewerkschaft wurde ihnen angeboten, eine eigene Fotoagentur zu gründen mit Abnahmegarantie durch den Verlag. Erst Anfang des Jahres waren die Fotografen bereits in die verlagseigene Media Dortmund GmbH ausgegliedert worden. Der Verlag Lensing-Wolff wolle mit den Kündigungen aus bestehenden Tarifverträgen aussteigen.
Lensing-Wolff, das ist der Verlag, der auf seiner Nachrichten-Website Westline bereits jetzt statt eines einzelnen vernünftigen Fotos pro Ereignis lieber riesige Schnappschuss-Gallerien hinklatscht, die aussehen, als würde ohne jegliche Bildredaktion speicherkartenweise einfach hochgeladen, was so kommt.

Haltung
Die Familie Schwarz-Schütte, die ihre Mehrheitsbeteiligung an dem mittelständischen Pharmaunternehmen [Schwarz Pharma] an den belgischen Wettbewerber UCB verkauft hat, wird jedem Mitarbeiter mit Ausnahme des Vorstandes zum Abschied 10.000 Euro schenken. In der Summe sind das 42 Millionen Euro. In dieser Höhe hat die Familie dieser Tage eine Einlage in die Gesellschaft geleistet.
Jeder Mitarbeiter, ob die mit weniger als 2000 Euro im Monat vergütete Bandarbeiterin oder die Führungskraft unterhalb der Vorstandsebene, habe zum Erfolg des Unternehmens beigetragen, begründet der 86 Jahre alte Gründer und Ehrenvorsitzende Rolf Schwarz-Schütte den einstimmigen Entschluß der Aktionärsfamilie.

Exotic
Inexplicably, companies that are not on the internet do exist. One of these players is Arca Swiss, maker of large format photo equipment: their Wayback Machine archives double as a fine collection of under construction and domain parking placeholder pages, going back as far as 1998. Instead of a website, Arca Swiss has the word of mouth and a seriously good product range. A 7.8 MB PDF catalog is available for download at Robert White's website.

Four photo galleries you should see (and a note on photo essays)

Strike 84 - "Images from the 1984/1985 Miner's Strike [in the UK] by Martin Shakeshaft". Runs nearly 10 minutes but is well worth the time. Includes original soundbites such as Thatchers' famous "Giving in to mob rule..." as voiceovers. Details on the gallery, strike timeline. Funny coincidence: the photo "Conservative Party Conference 1984" (which took place in Brighton, photo is at -7:45 on the timescale) seems to be showing the very hotel I slept in the day the West Pier burnt down. It's the white building to the right, given this photo has indeed been taken at Regency Square.

You will have noticed that half of the galleries come as animated photo essays. So far I didn't consider this form of presentation very interesting. Currently I am fascinated. Looks like a great method to convey the fourth element, to go beyond the single photo. As soon as I have made some sound recordings, I will try this out. Soundslides looks like an interesting (and inexpensive) software to start with; Martin Fuchs describes how to use it. You can find further photo essays at Magnum in Motion. The new Magnum Photos website isn't that bad, either.
