Großmann wird RWE-Chef
Überraschung: Stahlunternehmer Großmann wird RWE-Chef. Großmann, das ist der, den alle für komplett verrückt hielten, als er die zur Abwrackung vorgesehene Georgsmarienhütte für zwei Mark von Klöckner übernahm, um sie auf eigene Faust wiederzubeleben - daraus geworden ist eine Unternehmesgruppe, die sich mehr als sehen lassen kann. Eine packend geschrieben Hommage an Mann, Werk und Wagnis erschien übrigens kürzlich bei Hoffmann und Campe: Schwarz wie Schlacke, rot wie Glut - Die erstaunliche Geschichte der Georgsmarienhütte, unbedingt lesenswert.

Kleine Kurskorrektur
Statt dauerhafter Prävention [rechtsextremer Gewalt] und dem Aufbau einer demokratischen Kultur steht in dem neuen Bundesprogramm also die kurzfristige Reaktion auf akute Zwischenfälle und Gewalttaten im Vordergrund. Entsprechend soll nicht länger die Stärkung der Zivilgesellschaft das Ziel der Intervention sein, sondern die "Hilfe bei der Lösung der Krisensituation". Den bestehenden mobilen Beratungsteams und Opferberatungsstellen hingegen droht nach sechs Jahren Arbeit das Aus.
Ist doch praktisch: schon werden aus einem Strukturproblem lauter bedauerliche Einzelfälle. "Böses Erwachen, später" wird gratis mitgeliefert.

World Press Photo 2007
World Press Photo Award, that's where not too much variety is expected: another mother with child, another starving baby, another grieving woman. Not so this year. Winner is Young Lebanese drive through devastated neighborhood of South Beirut, 15 August which is so different from war photography as we know it that, when I first saw it, published as a double page spread, I briefly mistook it for a fashion outlet advertisment. I find it almost as striking as Todd Heisler's Heading Home. Other winning photos? A man in the moment of his casual execution on a gravel heap, a dead baby presented to the press, a dead baby with its stomach ripped open, a sniper attack captured embeddedly, a corpse with a torn off arm, and US Marine, returned home from Iraq to marry. Other than that last one, old school compared to the Beirut photo.

Yahoo! Pipes
Yahoo! says Pipes is "an interactive feed aggregator and manipulator". Tim O'Reilly says "it's a service that generalizes the idea of the mashup, providing a drag and drop editor that allows you to connect internet data sources, process them, and redirect the output" without having to be a nerd. And he is excited about it. Really excited:

Wikileaks
Wikileaks is developing an uncensorable Wikipedia for untraceable mass document leaking and analysis. Our primary interests are oppressive regimes in Asia, the former Soviet bloc, Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, but we also expect to be of assistance to those in the west who wish to reveal unethical behavior in their own governments and corporations. We aim for maximum political impact; this means our interface is identical to Wikipedia and usable by non-technical people. We have received over 1.2 million documents so far from dissident communities and anonymous sources.
Not by some technogeek, but by the person that once has released the Pentagon Papers to the New York Times.

Bilder im Kopf
Brandts Kniefall, Monroe über dem Lüftungsschacht, Schleyer und die RAF: es gibt Fotos, die jeder kennt, die man eigentlich gar nicht zu zeigen braucht. Genau das machen der WDR und das NRW-FORUM: eine Fotoausstellung im Radio. Personen des öffentlichen Lebens reden kurz über jeweils ein Foto, und da die (meisten) Bilder ja schon bekannt sind, ist das eigentlich interessante daran das Wie, das Bild, das die Befragten von sich selbst abgeben: zügig vorgetragene, präzise Beschreibungen und ebenso präzise Einordnungen hin, lehrbuchkompatible Abhandlungen da, annähernd aussagefreie Reiseerinnerungen dort. Dazu gibt es pro Bild jeweils einen redaktionellen Beitrag. Alles als MP3.

Externals
My photo website now has an Externals page. It's the page to go when you want to see better photos than mine, in real life or on the internet. It lists interesting current and future photo exhibitions, has a list of links to selected photo and photo related websites and blogs, and, for variety, a Quick Links section pretty similar to the one here on the blog, but of course geared towards the topic, where interesting links just flow by. Due to the static and dynamic natures of these link lists, I call them River and Rocks.
The exhibitions list is also available in iCalender format, so you can subscribe to it in iCal, Outlook, and most other calendar softwares. There also is a special link for easy subscription with Google Calendar. The River links have their own newsfeed, too. There is no OMPL version of the Rock links yet as many of the sites listed do not have feeds. Enjoy.

Kamp-Lintfort
Kamp-Lintfort, Innenstadt, gestern: Bergwerk Friedrich Heinrich, angezählt, auf der einen Straßenseite, die BenQ-Handyfabrik, abgestellt, auf der anderen. Parkplatz leer, letzte Protestplakate vereinzelt. Drei weiße Hochhäuser direkt daneben, 70iger Ultra-Chic, Stadtkrone, zwei Stück entmietet. Im großen Handyladen am Anfang der Fußgängerzone sieht es aus, als hätte es BenQ/Siemens nie gegeben.
