LF (from now on, I will mark on which film format the photo has been taken. LF = 4x5" large format, MF = 6x6, 6x7 or 6x9 cm medium format, unmarked = digital. Larger prints can be ordered from large format than from medium format, and larger from medium format than from digital.)

Tiny outage

Craigslist, Technorati, TypePad, LiveJournal and some other sites are down as something went wrong in the datacenter they all share. Not too much is known about the causes yet, but thre already is a tabloid story and a more serious story that could be related to the outage.

[Thanks, Maarten!]

50 Ways To Leave Your Lover (I)

One of the nice things of analog photography is the plenitude of ways you can ruin your photos. Exhibit I: accidental multiple exposure. Multiple exposure is coming home with more photos than you carried sheets of film. Not too easy. Instructions: After first exposure, reinsert dark slide wrong side up; keep used and unused sheet film holders in same place; do not pay attention to the consecutive numbering of the holders; do not memorize count of shots taken; do not take written notes.

Ingenuity. Photography and engineering 1846-2006

INGENUITY, referring to man's talent and natural ingenuity, explores the broad spectrum of our primeval engineering intelligence [...] Comprising 345 historical and contemporary photographic works by a total of 164 photographers, the exhibition illustrates the diversity of man's technical and industrial inventiveness.

At the Brussels Centre for Fine Arts; now through September 9. A good reason to return to that nice city.

Increasing options

Since I started using medium and large format film a while ago, I entirely stopped using my digital camera in a lot of situations. While I still consider digital cameras indispensable and feel amazed by what current models are capable of, there is just one thing one can do wrong with using film: to not start now, but later. Film is widely available, new and used equipment markets offer more choices than ever, so there is no reason to limit onself to digital imaging.

Nice feature in Opera Mini 4 beta

Opera Mini 4 beta on Nokia E61
Opera Mini 4 beta on Nokia E61

While Opera Mini 3 on Symbian smartphones has its advantages, I never really liked it. Not so Opera Mini 4, currently available as beta and in use here from Day 1: with a fluid scroll-and-zoom interface, it makes webbrowsing on a E61 even more pleasant than it is anyway. Screenshot: when moving the new mouse pointer over a link, not just the chosen link, but all links that are pointing to the same URL get highlighted - a mini feature that shows how much attention to details is given.
