Propagandaerfolg
Wissenschaft/Technik und Zeitungen, das passt oft nicht gut zusammen. Daß die Süddeutsche hanebüchene Agenturartikel übernimmt überrascht bei der allgemeinen Verflachung der Onlineausgabe nicht. Jetzt bringt sogar die ZEIT schon unterirdisch recherchierte Artikel: Volles Rohr über eine Kohlenmonoxid-Pipeline hätte sich die Autorin auch gleich von den Protestierenden schreiben lassen können - deren "Giftgas"-Diktion offenbar gedankenlos zu übernehmen ging ja schon. Bleibt langsam wirklich nur noch ausgerechnet die FAZ.

In the far background, one of four regional multi-Gigawatt power plants, featuring up to 14 blocks each. In the mines of that area, material handling is almost exclusively by conveyor belts; connections from the lignite storages to the power plants are by train.

Watchful Eyes
I first visited London in 2003, and what I really found distracting was not the massive use of CCTV supervision which I knew of before, but an governmental advertisment campaign praising tightened security measures on busses. It took me a moment to realize that this ad was not by a hip fashion label. Now I found a photo of it on monoscope.com and still find it stunning to see straight 1984 symbolism used in such a manner. What can be more revealing?

DK Recycling und Roheisen, better known as Duisburger Kupferhütte. In a recycling process, the company produces cast iron pigs (Gießereiroheisenmasseln) from metallic residues.

Miner's lunch break

Mining electrician having lunch break in the control room of the Eastern steam winding engine of number 2 shaft, Fürst Leopold colliery, Dorsten, Germany. The two 4-cylinder engines of shaft 2 are the last steam engines in regular use in the Ruhr coal mining district. Put into service in 1914, they will see retirement later this year as mining acitivies have come to an end at this colliery.

Seraing blast furnace to restart?
There is no offical word yet, but all signs indicate that ArcelorMittal will restart the Cockerill Sambre Seraing blast furnace (HF 6) later this year. Arcelor blew out the furnace in 2005 as part of a mid-term plan to shut down the entire hot metal production in the Liège basin and to reduce hot metal capacities across Europe. The merger with Mittal meant a revision of these plans. For now, the idea is to compensate maintenance-related production losses of other European ArcelorMittal sites with Seraing iron, but likely, the entire Liège shutdown plan might be called into question. Last night, the Seraing blast furnace was in full illumination again, a sight not seen for long months. I reported on its closure in these blog postings:

Die Kreise, die die FAZ bei technischen Themen - und ein Brückeneinsturz ist eines - um andere Zeitungen läuft, sind so groß, da fragt man sich, warum es manche Blätter nicht gleich wie Sat.1 mit den "Nachrichten" machen.

Inseln der Vernunft
"Offensichtliche Unverhältnismäßigkeit", "kein öffentliches Interesse", "Rechtsfrieden nicht gestört", "unbedeutend" und schließlich "Ermittlungen auf strafrechtlicher Grundlage, die Grundrechtseingriffe nach sich ziehen, dürfen nicht aus sachfremden Erwägungen – wie etwa allein zur Beschaffung von Beweismitteln für ein Zivilverfahren – geführt werden". Die ganz dicke Packung. Während der Gesetzgeber (nicht nur) in Urheberrechtsfragen ja zunehmend öffentliches Interesse öffentliches Interesse sein lässt und fröhlich nach der Pfeife von Lobbyvertretern tanzt, scheinen sich in Staatsanwaltschaften also noch Inseln der Vernunft zu finden. Wenigstens etwas.

Idealhüttenwerk
Nach [Dr. Friedrich Harders Auffassung (Hoesch Stahl AG)] sollte ein solches Idealhüttenwerk drei Stahlwerke besitzen, nämlich ein 12-Millionen-Jahrestonnen-LD-Stahlwerk mit drei 400-Tonnen-Konvertern, ein 6-Millionen-Jahrestonnen-LD-Stahlwerk mit drei 250-Tonnen-Konvertern und ein 2-Millionen-Jahrestonnen-Elektrostahlwerk mit vier 150-Tonnen-Lichtbogenhochleistungsöfen. Mit je 20 Millionen Jahrestonnen Rohstahlkapazität - Größenordnungen, die japanische und amerikanische Wettbewerber bereits erreicht haben - könnten im Jahre 1980 drei solcher Hüttenwerke die zu erwartende Stahlerzeugung der Bundesrepublik in Höhe von 60 Millionen Tonnen bewältigen.

Auch wenn Hoesch zu dieser Zeit wahrscheinlich kurz überlegte, in Dortmund zwischen der Kokerei Hansa und der im Bereich Ellinghausen zu errichtenden Zentralschachtanlage X zur Ergänzung der Werke Westfalenhütte, Phoenix und Union ein weiteres, komplett neues Hüttenwerk zu bauen und zu diesem Zweck bereits Grundstücke aufgekauft hatte, ausgeführt wurde ein Hardersches "Idealhüttenwerk" nie. Auf der grünen Wiese wurden in Deutschland seit Ende des zweiten Weltkriegs bisher in Duisburg-Beeckerwerth, in Bremen und in Eisenhüttenstadt Hüttenwerke errichtet.

Witnessing Northern England
I wrote about the remarkable Side Photographic Collection before, but now that they have improved their website and made the photos more convenient to find and browse, it is time to mention it again. The Side Collection is a stunning photographic account of life in England's industrial North in the 1970s and 1980ies when steel, coal, coke, fishing, textiles and tabacco all left. To a lesser extent, it also covers the preludium to and the aftermath of that period of time. While it is worth to browse the entire collection (who would want to miss the Sander Collection or Building the Tyne Bridge?), here are some pointers. The rather huge list starts with one of my favorites:
