Topography of the Titanic
Exploring how the spirit of an idea impacts a place is what fascinates me most about taking photographies. Spirits of ideas can impact places long after the idea has passed, and one can sense, smell, see those spirits when on site. Learning about a place from other sources and researching its history makes them more visible on each return visit. Eventually, a photographic account can emerge, preserving them. In this sense, I can nothing but love Kai-Olaf Hesses project Topography of the Titanic:
In October 2002, German photographer Kai-Olaf Hesse initiated Topography of Titanic; an extensive photographic survey of Queens Island sites related to the making of the Titanic; the historic marks, remaining buildings, and suggestive blanks left by rapid demolition and transformation.

"Chinese companies flocked to the European fire sale, stripping Dortmund of its assets"
The Ruhr Valley city of Dortmund, where ThyssenKrupp once made steel, still suffers from high unemployment because of the loss of jobs to lower-cost countries like China. But Germans can buy Chinese-made iPods, washing machines and cargo ships at prices that, because of lax pollution controls, do not reflect the toll on the environment. And the outsourcing of polluting industries has given them cleaner air and water.
It appeared in The New York Times, it's called "China Grabs West’s Smoke-Spewing Factories" and it's hands down the best story on what's going on my city and region I've seen so far.
The very change that story is about, this epochal change we are witnessing happening right in front of our doorsteps, is what makes me pull out my photo camera again and again.

System Lidl
Mittwoch, 14.05 Uhr: Frau M. möchte in ihrer Pause ein Telefonat mit ihrem Handy führen, es erfolgt die automatische Ansage, dass das Guthaben auf ihrem Prepaid-Handy nur noch 85 Cent beträgt. Schließlich erreicht sie telefonisch eine Freundin, mit welcher sie heute Abend gerne gemeinsam kochen würde, dieses setzt aber voraus, so Frau M., dass ihr Gehalt bereits gutgeschrieben wurde, da sie ansonsten kein Geld mehr hätte, um einzukaufen.
Mittwoch, 16.45 Uhr: Obwohl Frau N. bis jetzt im Bereich Non-Food/Aktionsware immer noch nicht allzu viel geschafft hat, macht sie pünktlich ihre Pause. Sie sitzt zusammen mit Frau L. im Pausenraum; die Kräfte unterhalten sich über Gehälter, Zuschläge und bezahlte Überstunden. Frau N. hofft ebenfalls, dass ihr Gehalt bereits heute gutgeschrieben wurde, da sie für heute Abend dringend Geld benötigt (Grund = ?)
Lidl bespitztelt seine Mitarbeiter systematisch. In so einem System Angst muckt wenigstens keiner auf und man weiß, wen man wie loswerden muss und kann. Die einfachen Mitarbeiter sind schließlich Schuld, daß man nicht noch billiger sein kann. Und Abschaum, der solche Spitzeleien ganz freiwillig macht, findet sich eh überall.

Volkswohl Bund Insurances Headquarters (I)

Volkswohl Bund insurance company, former headquarters, 1970-built part, main staircase. Blasted February 17, 2008.
Insurances are an industry characteristic to the city of Dortmund that I haven't mentioned here before, and Volkswohl Bund is one of the insurance companies registered here. At the moment, it is replacing its headquarters. The new ones will be errected where the 1955- and 1970-built parts of former one stood.

Gelten Landes- und Bundesminister, die Sprüche des Bundesverfassungsgerichts allenfalls als hinderliche Petitesse auf dem Weg zu maßloser Überwachung ansehen, eigentlich als verfassungsfeindliche Elemente?

Ein medialer Geschichtsrevisionismus der neuen Art
DIE ZEIT über eine neue, seit Martin Walsers Paulskirchenrede grassierende, von Fernsehfilmen wie Die Gustloff oder Der Untergang beflügelte und von "Knoppaganda" angetriebene Form der Erinnerungskultur, in der so getan wird, als wären alle nur Opfer gewesen - und die damit "weit hinter den Forschungsstand der letzten 15 Jahre zurückfällt", der ja gerade besage, daß das Dritte Reich sich eben "auch auf einen breiten volksgemeinschaftlichen Konsens stützte" →
