It's my final stand / I make a fist out of each hand / To shadows of the past / Take a breath and I scream attack
Look for the Truth, one of the best songs of Iron Maiden's glorious album The X-Factor: Album audio (ignore the video), Live in Poland, lyrics.
The Editors - An End Has A Start. The sound that so reminds me of driving through Berlin this summer. Of course found on Motor FM.
Joe Zawinul died early Tuesday at 75.
Stories in English at The Associated Press, in German at Der Standard and Die ZEIT.
Current: The Nationals - Mistaken for Strangers - YouTube is lacking a repeat button
70ies: Curved Air - Back Street Luv, Curved Air - Melinda
60ies: How Can We Hang On To A Dream: Original version by Rudy Bennett, better known version by Tim Hardin (now which video is more strange?)
More old stuff, just for the fun of it: Siouxsie and the Banshees, live at Sartory-Säle Köln for WDR Rockpalast, July 19, 1981. The entire concert is on YouTube. In setlist order:
Israel
Halloween
Regal Zone
Spell Bound
Arabian Knights
Switch
Pulled to Bits
Headcut
Tenant
Night Shift
Sin in my Heart
But not them
Voody Dolly
Hong Kong Garden
Eve
Happy House
Skin
The cover versions are where it's getting awesome: Siouxsie and the Banshees covering Passenger, This Wheel's on Fire. The latter is written by Bob Dylan, and speaking of him, here's on of his best: Huricane!
Still great: The Ramones - Pet Sematary. On YouTube (original video, alternative video), or now and then on Motor FM (MP3 stream).

Dry and fiercely played metal with actual singing instead of the silly growls other bands deliver. Swedish. Four free MP3 files from their excellent 2005 album Primo Victoria: Thundergods, Panzer Batallion, Primo Victoria, Hellrider.
Swedish band. Free MP3 I like: Caught Up, Loser's Way Out, Black Bag. EP can be bought for 6 € including shipping from their website. My favorite Milestone song "One Single Thing" is not on the EP but luckily gets played on last.fm quite often.
Posted here before, but still good to get you going in the morning: Allright, Allright by Norge's The Carburetors. Have fun.
Now that's the right song to get you going in the morning. Streaming quite often in a not too bad audio quality on NetRock 101.
Rolling Stones - Steel Wheels, released in 1989 and still so good that you really should get it. Addictive.
The "Presenting"-section of this weblog with its occasional music recommendation has been a bit dormant recently. So here we go again. Presenting today: Cowboy Prostitutes, another Swedish Rock'n'Roll chapel, with its self titel album released early in 2005. The Over the Top sample is quite nice, but better get Alive'n'Well or even better the entire album. It's only Rock'n'Roll but I like it. Drawback: poor production quality with ridiculously loud trebles.

Infernal Love, the melancholic 1996 piece of Northern Ireland's rock band Therapy? is just the right thing for long fall evenings - or a dark, rainy and cold summer evening like today's. Skip the horrible "Loose", enjoy how the songs are linked by pieces by Belfast DJ David Holmes, turn up the volume on "Misery", "Me vs You" and "A Moment of Clarity" and don't miss the startling acoustic cover of Husker Dü's "Diane". It's an understatement to say that most of MTV Unplugged has been rather shitty, with few exceptions. One of them: Neil Young Unplugged. What a glory, and currently back on heavy rotation in my CD player. If you haven't heard if yet, do so now. Probably one of the best accoustic sets ever, and one of the CDs that has been most influential to me. I do not like the opening track and certainly I do not like Harvest Moon, but Mr Soul in its original Buffalo Springfield sound, Transformer Man and Hurricane played on a pump organ are revelations. What a luck that rust never sleeps.

Goes like this:
The Crazy Girls and The Javalins: He He, Ha Ha
The Rattles live at Star-Club Hamburg: Mashed Potatoes (1963)
The German Blue Flames, the Kings of Cool from Gelsenkirchen: Besser gehts mit Coke (1966)
Ruth Brandin's GDR-sound: Mich hat noch keiner beim Twist (1964)
From other countries:
Status Quo: Pictures of Matchstickmen (1968)
The Golden Earrings: Daddy, buy me a girl (1966)
And if you want better sound quality:
Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out.
Voilà!

Yesterday night, my area TV station aired "Strangers In The Night - Die Bert-Kaempfert-Story", a documentary by Marc Boettcher. It is two hours long, but when it is on your TV station, don't miss it. A wonderful glimpse into the life and work of a past period's forgotten megastar.
All style, no substance, but fast and fun: The Killers - Somebody told me. Good one for hanging out at the club. Music: Windows Media, Real. Video: Windows Media, Real Media. Official site: Thekillersmusic.com.

Perhaps I am just an old school fart here, but does live music get any better than this? Probably not. Just got readdicted after some months of abstinence.
Well now everything dies baby that's a fact
But maybe everything that dies someday comes back
Put your makeup on fix your hair up pretty

Als Willi Brandt Bundeskanzler war
Hatte Vati noch volles Haar
War Ute Lemper noch kein Star
Als Willi Brandt Bundeskanzler war
We said we’d walk together baby come what may
That come the twilight should we lose our way
If as we’re walkin a hand should slip free
I’ll wait for you
And should I fall behind
Wait for me
We swore we’d travel darlin’ side by side
We’d help each other stay in stride
But each lover’s steps fall so differently
But I’ll wait for you
And if I should fall behind
Wait for me
Now everyone dreams of a love lasting and true
But you and I know what this world can do
So let’s make our steps clear that the other may see
And I’ll wait for you
If I should fall behind
Wait for me
Now there’s a beautiful river in the valley ahead
There ’neath the oak’s bough soon we will be wed
Should we lose each other in the shadow of the evening trees
I’ll wait for you
And should I fall behind
Wait for me
Darlin’ I’ll wait for you
Should I fall behind
Wait for me
Bruce Sprinsteen 1992
All my dark dreams
Drift like smoke in the breeze
The fear grips me as I fall towards my sleep
Here comes the nightmare that never ends
Here is the dream that makes monsters of men
In the house of my soul
In rooms of ugliness and cold
Memories locked away
All the doubts and fears I never faced
Now they come again
I am falling down to meet with them
fear within us all
Mine awake and they stand up tall
Look for the truth
Deepest cut of all from you
Knife of the truth
Blade of hatred slicing through
I pray my sleep will break
Maybe this time I won't wake
Weakness I hide so well
This dagger in my mind will tell
It's my final stand
I make a fist out of each hand
To the shadows of the past
Take a breath and I scream attack

71 years, diabetes. If you think this is all Country, you're dead wrong. Go and listen to American III and American IV. Go and listen to magic.
Neil Young interviews are rare events - the last longer one I read was in Mojo magazine a long while ago - so new ones always catch my attention. Now, he discussed his new album Greendale with David Fricke of Rolling Stone magazine:
"This is a time, I believe, of great inner turmoil for the majority of the American people. There is a new morality coming out of this administration - fundamentalist religious views; a holier-than-thou attitude towards the rest of the world - that is not classically American. I don't think Americans felt holier-than-thou in the twentieth century. We were happy and successful, with a great lifestyle. But something else is going on now. That's what Greendale is about. That's what Grandpa's problem is. He can't understand what's going on. He sees all of these things that the Patriot Act has taken away from what he feels is America."

The new Muse album Absolution, out in Germany on September 22, might well be one of the most interesting releases to hit the turntables this fall. Though it has some weak spots, sounding like Radiohead on a bad trip or trying to imitate the sheer beauty of Beth Gibbons songs, it basically is a show of what "ballroom-dancing punk poets with fire in their eyes and grit in their veins," as New Musical Express puts it, can do.
Kaizers Orchestra: six well dressed young men from Norway, playing Hummpa rock on "pump organs, oil barrels and whatever junk they find along the way".
Heard them live at the Haldener Open Air yesterday (where tonight, Patti Smith herself will play). So full of energy, play will and fun, it appears perfectly clear to me why the Orchestra's performance was elected Concert of the Year at Roskilde 2002. To find out yourself, go and listen to the live excerpts and and watch the video clips at the band's website.

The hebig.org CD of the month: The Hellacopters, By The Grace of God, 2002
Fast, melodic, inspired 70ies Rock'n'Roll That Sounds Fresh And YoungTM, best consumed during a feelgood summer highway cruise. Thirteen songs sparkling in diversity and creativity, no lenghts, repetitions, slowdowns or real fillers found. A rock piano so good it reminds you more than just a bit of the E Steet Band. A tour de force that shows how overrated The Hives and most of those other The-bands are. If there is something wrong with it, it has no rough edges, and it won't be your thing it you want the Dirty Punk Hellacopters back: a classic rock radio might play it right between Lynryd Skynyrd and Journey, though it never sounds dated. If you want fresh and fun Rock'n'Roll for the summer, go for it.

Finally, the new Live album is out. "Birds of Pray" is not a masterpiece, but far better than the disasterous "V". Though they did not get entirely rid of shallow ripples and pathetic, kitschy lyrics, and though they sometimes even use most uninspired linear fade outs, it has its strong moments. If you like Live, go for it. If you don't know this band yet, better go for 1994's "Throwing Copper", perhaps one of the best rock albums ever made.

Fischerspooner, a two men lo-fi-electro combo known for New Wave Live Freak Shows with 20 people and more on the stage, are still cool. Gentlemen, if you don't have the Emerge Remix yet, get it now.

BBC News: "Legendary jazz and blues singer Nina Simone [who's smoky voice soared in civil rights songs and interpretations of gospel, ballads and George Gershwin], has died at the age of 70 at her home in southern France, her agent has announced.
Simone was one of the last divas of jazz, was considered one of the finest songwriters and musicians of her day, and was a staunch supporter of the American black civil rights movement. She was perhaps best known for the famous single My Baby Just Cares For Me, a song which became one of the most popular and most listened to singles in the 20th Century."

"Soul legend Edwin Starr has died Thursday at the age of 61, after having what is thought to have been a heart attack. [...] His biggest hit was the protest song War, which asked 'what is it good for?', in 1970. [...] Away from singing he also presented a BBC Radio 2 series about the civil rights movement, which was nominated for a prestigious Sony Award."

Ladies and Gentlemen, buy your tickets: Neil Young will play solo accoustic in Europe this year. Tentative schedule for Germany: April 29 Hamburg, April 30 Berlin, May 1 Frankfurt, May 7 Stuttgart, May 9 Hannover.
I introduced them before, but The Datsuns are still great to get you going on a Monday morning - just the finest in loud and dirty Rock'n'Roll. Find more posters at Gigposters.com.

GUANO APES - PRETTY IN SCARLET

"For the entire year of 2003 (January 1st to December 31st) this page will feature one mp3 file (every day) to download. The content will be focused on musical pieces, but will also include spoken word. Listeners of the incredibly strange and outsider realm take note, for this is the majority of material that will be made available. [...] Previous daily offerings can be found in the archives."

Look out of your windows, watch the skies
Read all the instructions with bright blue eyes
We're W.A.S.Ps, proud American sons
We know how to clean our teeth and how to strip down a gun
We're the 51st state of America
Our star-spangled Union Jack flutters so proud
Over the dancing heads of the merry patriotic crowd
Tip your hat to the Yankee conqueror
We've got no reds under the bed
With guns under our pillows
We're the 51st state of America
Here in the land of opportunity
Watch us revel in our liberty
You can say what you like
But it doesn't change anything
'Cos the corridors of power
Are an ocean away . . .
We're the 51st state of America
New Model Army, 1985
As soon as you're born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool
Till you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
When they've tortured and scared you for 20 odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function you're so full of fear
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV
And you think you're so clever and classless and free
But you're still fucking peasants as far as I can see
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
There's room at the top they are telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill
A working class hero is something to be
If you want to be a hero just follow me
If you want to be a hero well just follow me
John Lennon, 1970
Here I stand head in hand
Turn my face to the wall
If she's gone I can't go on
Feelin' two-foot small
Everywhere people stare
Each and every day
I can see them laugh at me
And I hear them say
Hey you've got to hide your love away
Hey you've got to hide your love away
How could I even try
I can never win
Hearing them, seeing them
In the state I'm in
How could she say to me
Love will find a way
Gather round all you clowns
Let me hear you say
Hey you've got to hide your love away
Hey you've got to hide your love away
John Lennon
